Rare Albany-Slip-Decorated Stoneware Ring Flask, Southern U.S. origin, possibly Whelchel Family, Gaffney, SC, late 19th century, hollow, ring-shaped with raised molding around upper edge and applied spout with rounded mouth, the surface covered in a tannish glaze over iron-rich clay and decorated with haphazardly brushed Albany slip throughout. The glazes on this jug appear to be consistent with those used by the Whelchel family of Gaffney, South Carolina during the final decades of the 19th century. Provenance: From a fifty-year SC collection. Excellent condition with a few in-the-firing contact marks to underside and two small in-the-firing contact marks to side of jug. A small chip to raised molding on top surface. L 9".
