Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Syrup Jug with Brooksville, WV Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1885, ovoid jug with rare pinched pouring spout, featuring the stenciled advertising, "J. P. KNIGHT. / DEALER IN / GENERAL / MERCHANDISE / BROOKSVILLE,. W. VA." Decorated above with a freehand "2" flanked by flourishes, between two wavy stripes. A straight stripe at base and cobalt highlight to upper handle terminal. Only the second example of Brooksville, WV advertising stoneware consigned to our auction, the rarity of this work is compounded by its pitcher-like spout, believed to be unique among Western Pennsylvania jugs that we have offered. Chips and wear to spout. Two flakes to handle, measuring 1 3/8" and 1 1/8". Some staining and residue to surface, including remnants of Albany slip on proper right side. H 14 1/2".
