Scarce One-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Guyandotte, WV Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1880, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, featuring the stenciled advertising, "JOHN M. BEALE. / DEALER IN / GENERAL MERCHANDISE / GUYANDOTTE. W.Va." Freehand stripes above and below. Only the second piece of stoneware advertising this town that we have offered. A thin X-shaped crack on underside, part of which forms a 1 7/8" x 3" T at base on jar's proper right side. Staining to surface. Residue to base on reverse. Interior of rim with a small chip and some roughness. H 10 1/4".
