Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Slip-Trailed Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. MILLER. / WHEELING, Va.," Dated 1831, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and semi-squared rim, decorated with a stylized slip-trailed floral design consisting of a flower blossom surrounded by four stems with leaves. Slip-trailed with the date, "1831.," below. Reverse shoulder impressed with rare "J. MILLER / WHEELING, Va." maker's mark above a two-gallon capacity mark. One of a small number of signed and dated examples by this maker known. Five small-to-medium -sized rim chips. A 5 1/2" Y-shaped line on underside, forming a short T at base. A salt drip near base. H 13 3/4".
