One-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Cobalt-Stenciled Advertising for Demuth's Snuff, Stamped "F.H. COWDEN / HARRISBURG," PA origin, circa 1880, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and flared rim, featuring the stenciled cobalt advertising, "DEMUTH'S / CELEBRATED / SNUFF / ESTABLISHED / 1770 / LANCASTER, PA." Cobalt accent to maker's mark. Includes salt-glazed lid. A restored area extending from rim to base on right side of jar, with some minor touch-up to the "A" in "PA." Additional restored spots to rim. Minor staining. Some absence to stenciling, primarily to the word, "ESTABLISHED." Flaking to lid. H (excluding lid) 9 1/4".
