Extremely Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Profuse Cobalt Decoration of a Bird Holding a Flower and Double Grape Bunches, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid pail with tall collar and pouring spout, decorated on the front with two bunches of grapes flanking the spout, along with wreath-like brushwork around the base of the spout and cobalt swags under the maker's mark. Reverse with decoration of a long-tailed bird perched on a leafy branch, holding a flower in its beak. A truly remarkable example of Cowden & Wilcox stoneware. Highly unusual combination of two iconic Cowden motifs on a scarce form. Excellent condition. An in-the-firing stone ping on reverse. Faint line and tiny chip in handle located at base on reverse.
