Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG .PA," circa 1865, cylindrical jar with flared collar and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed stem bearing two tulips, a drooping, graduated blossom, and numerous leaves. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced PA collection, purchased by the consignor between 1963 and 1975. Three rim chips on reverse. A 2" crack from rim above one handle. A 1 3/4" crack from rim above opposite handle. Minor chipping to inner rim for lid. A 2 1/4" U-shaped surface crack at base on reverse, which does not extend through to interior. H 11 1/2".
