Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Swan Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX. / HARRISBURG .PA," circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and flattened rim, decorated with a brushed design of a swan with cobalt-highlighted wing, swimming on stylized water. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Excellent size, desirable decoration, and strong color. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced PA collection, purchased by the consignor between 1963 and 1975. Rim chips. A shallow in-the-firing contact mark (chip) to bottom edge. H 7 1/2".
