One-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Batter Pail, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG," PA origin, circa 1870, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, handle at base reverse, and applied clay tabs holding a wood-and-wire bail handle, decorated on the reverse with a large brushed leaf and around the base of the spout with a brushed wreath. Cobalt highlights to applied clay tabs and handle terminals. Includes original tin lid. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced PA collection, purchased by the consignor between 1963 and 1975. A 3 1/2" inverted Y-shaped hairline from rim on reverse. Three thin cracks from rim on front, measuring 2 1/2", 3", and 5" diagonally from rim. Two tiny spout nicks. Very minor base chips. Some fry to cobalt. H 8 1/4".
