Outstanding Stoneware Pitcher with Incised Rooster Decoration, Westerwald, Germany origin, 19th century, ovoid pitcher with tall, narrow spout and tooling to base and rim, decorated with a large incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a rooster within a wreath. Appealing, stylized features to the bird include a plume-like tail, running stance, impressed eye, and horizontal incising to the neck. Cobalt banding to rim and base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Inscribed cobalt numeral to reverse. Shallow base chips. Staining to handle. Minor nicks to molding below rim. A faint 4 1/2" surface line or scratch to front shoulder area, not visible on interior. Minor surface wear. H 15 1/2".
