Exceptional William III Stoneware Portrait Jug with Cobalt and Manganese Decoration, Westerwald, Germany, circa 1689-1702, highly-ovoid form with footed base and heavily-tooled collar, decorated with a central molded medallion depicting King William III of England (1650-1702), also known as William of Orange, surrounded by the words, "BRIT. FRANC. ET.HIB .REX. & WILHELMVS: III.D G.MAG.." Surface lavishly-decorated throughout with a flowering plant motif featuring sprig-molded blossoms emanating from comb-incised stems. A stem connecting the base of the plant with the William III medallion cleverly represents the image of the king sprouting as a large blossom. Dramatic cobalt and manganese slip brushwork highlights the pitcher throughout. The size, desirable portrait medallion, and extravagant decoration of this work rank it as arguably the best example of Westerwald stoneware that we have ever offered. Very nice condition. A tight Y-shaped hairline across underside. Faint crazing at base on reverse. Some faint crazing to collar and handle. Two minor rim chips. H 11 3/4".
