Exceptional Westerwald Stoneware Jar with Incised Leaping Stag and Bird Motifs, German origin, 19th century, ovoid jar with open loop handles and tooling to shoulder and base, decorated on the front and reverse with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a stag leaping above a bird with turned head. Elaborate incised floral motifs appear to the right of the figures as well as under each handles. Cobalt highlights throughout. Handles decorated with slip-trailed cobalt vining along with scalloped line motifs surrounding the terminals. Cobalt banding to shoulder and base. Base incised with a cobalt-highlighted "4." A tight 11 1/4" spider crack ascending from base below one handle. A tight 7" vertical crack under one handle. Faint surface lines above deer, not visible on interior. Some surface lines to interior, not visible on exterior. H 14 3/4".
