Exceptional Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Pitcher with Stenciled Pear Motif, Stenciled "PALATINE POTTERY CO / PALATINE / W VA," circa 1875, semi-ovoid pitcher with tall collar and semi-rounded rim, the body decorated with a stenciled pear surrounded by Palatine Pottery Company maker's stenciling. Spout area decorated with elaborate swag and dash designs. Handle decorated with profuse dashes along with cobalt highlights to the terminals. Stoneware pitchers from this town are considered rare and this example is the first that we have seen featuring Palatine Pottery Company's iconic pear motif, a design popularly-used on this operation's canning jars. Restoration to spout along with a thin, sealed diagonal crack extending from spout to midsection. A thin, sealed 7" crack from rim on right side of pitcher. A 1" piece of adhered clay at base of pitcher. Right side of pitcher with a 7/8" piece of adhered clay and minor in-the-firing surface chip. Underside with "#45" written in black marker. H 11 1/4".
