Exceptional Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Eagle Motif, Stenciled "EAGLE POTTERY," Palatine, WV origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large stenciled design of a Federal eagle with shield across its chest, clutching an olive branch and arrows in its talons, and carrying a banner inscribed "EAGLE POTTERY" in its beak. Elaborate freehand cobalt stripe decoration above and below. Stenciled "4" at base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Excellent condition with some light surface wear. H 14 1/2".
