Rare Ten-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "J.M. HARDEN & CO. / PALATINE / W. VA.," circa 1875, large-sized, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, featuring large brushed stripe and profuse dashed decoration above J.M. Harden maker's stenciling. Stylized tulips and flourishes to midsection. Base with freehand "10" above a freehand stripe. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Exceptional large size with unusual and visually-appealing freehand brushwork. Chips to interior of rim. Chips to left handle. A 1 1/2" loss to right handle. An approximately 7" crack from rim on right side of jar's front. A 2 1/2" hairline from rim on left side of jar's front. A thin 5 1/2" crack from rim on reverse. An in-the-firing surface flake to side and reverse of jar. A small area of scattered flakes to shoulder on reverse. Some in-the-firing crazing to underside, not visible on interior. H 19 1/2".
