Scarce Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Spittoon, Palatine, WV origin, circa 1880, cylindrical form with recessed top and carved semi-circular opening at shoulder, decorated around with four large stenciled floral motifs. Top decorated with large freehand stripes radiating from the central opening. A 2 5/8" x 1 5/8" flake to underside at edge. An approximately 1 1/2" x 1" chipped section to top edge. Chips to opening at shoulder. A thin 3 3/4" crack emanating from central opening. A crack extending from central opening across top and down side of spittoon, extending 5 1/2" onto underside. A minor 1" area of in-the-making roughness to base, which is glazed over. H 4 3/8" ; Diam. (at base) 9 1/2".
