Five-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "NEW YORK / STONEWARE CO. / FORT EDWARD, N.Y.", circa 1875, large-sized jug of cylindrical form with flared spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a leafy vine. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A tight 3 3/4" inverted Y-shaped line to front, emanating from a small surface chip or ping. Some dryness and fry to cobalt. Spout chips. A 6" vertical line to shoulder area. A 2 1/2" line to shoulder on reverse. Base chips, mostly visible when jug is turned over. A small glazed-over base chip on reverse. A minor surface flake near base on front. Light wear to handle.
