Scarce Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Pinwheel Decoration, Stenciled "From / James Hamilton & Co. / Greensboro, Pa.", circa 1870, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a band of six stenciled pinwheel motifs above James Hamilton & Co. maker's stenciling. Freehand stripe to shoulder. Base with boldfaced stenciled "2" flanked by stenciled flourishes, underscored by a freehand stripe. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a tiny nick to exterior of rim and some very minor wear to interior of rim.
