Fine Westerwald Stoneware Mug with American Independence Date and Elaborate Incised Decoration, Dated 1776, cylindrical form with tooled shoulder and base, the front decorated with a finely-incised design of two seals surmounted by a crown, above the large date "1776". Wreath-like foliate decoration appears to the left and right. Cobalt highlights throughout. Cobalt spots to rim and base. Mug includes an early pewter lid, engraved "M E S / 1780". Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H (to top of finial) 8 3/4".
