Very Rare Ovoid Stoneware Water Cooler with Cobalt Stripe Decoration, Western PA origin, circa 1870, approximately four-gallon, ovoid cooler with heavily-tooled midsection, semi-rounded rim, and large circular bunghole, decorated with three wide stripes across the body. Brushed cobalt around bunghole. Excellent form and color. This highly-unusual water cooler is the first Western PA example of this style we have seen. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in Virginia. In-the-firing dryness to reverse. Nicks to interior of bunghole. 1 1/2" chip on side of rim. Thin 2 1/2" crack on underside, extending 2 1/4" up base of cooler on left side of front. A few minor base chips. H 14 3/8".
