Very Fine Westerwald Stoneware "GR" Jug, German origin, circa 1740, bulbous jug with tooled foot and heavily-tooled collar, decorated with a large applied Georgius Rex medallion featuring a crown. Medallion is surrounded by impressed overlapping circles and clustered oval decorations resembling grapes. Sides of jugs decorated with incised floral and scalloped line designs. Decoration highlighted in cobalt slip. Collar decorated with manganese slip. Incised "4" on reverse. An outstanding example of 18th century stoneware. Excellent, as-made condition with in-the-firing separation lines in medallion and at handle terminals. H 7 1/2".
