One-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, pierced clay tabs with wood-and-wire bail handle, and handle at base on reverse; brush-decorated on the reverse with a horizontal tulip motif, a wreath at the base of the spout, and highlights to the tabs and handle terminals. Includes perforated tin lid and spout cover. An in-the-firing piece of adhered clay to tip of spout. Some bubbling to cobalt on reverse. Some in-the-firing mottling to glaze. A small in-the-firing surface chip. A small in-the-firing contact mark near base and one on bottom edge. H 8 3/4".
