Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "SAM'L I. IRVINE, / NEWVILLE, PA," circa 1865, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a leafy stem bearing three flower blossoms. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. A 1 3/8" flake to rim on reverse. A stone inclusion at base on reverse with a short in-the-firing crack ascending from it and another short in-the-firing crack extending from it onto underside. An additional 5 1/2" vertical, inverted Y-shaped line ascends from this damage on reverse. A few additional short, vertical surface lines at base on reverse, which occurred in the firing. A small flake to cobalt on front. A circular in-the-firing contact mark to interior base. H 10 7/8".
