Exceptional Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "SAM'L I. IRVINE / NEWVILLE, PA.," circa 1865, cylindrical jug with semi-squared spout, decorated with artistically-brushed floral design featuring three blossoms emanating from a stem with numerous heavily-veined leaves. Cobalt accent to maker's mark. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. An outstanding example of Cumberland County pottery and one of the finest-decorated Irvine pieces that we have seen. A tight, approximately 5 1/2" spider line to shoulder. A small glazed-over spout chip. A minor glazed-over base chip. H 14".
