Extremely Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration and Incised Math Problem, Dated 1866, Stamped "SAM'L. I. IRVINE, / NEWVILLE, PA," 1866, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed flowering branch design extending diagonally across the front. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Reverse with highly unusual incised date, "1866," underscored by a scalloped flourish. Underside with large incised addition problem. The first example of signed and dated Newville, Pennsylvania stoneware that we have ever offered. Very nice condition with minor exfoliation to reverse, a short in-the-firing fissure from rim on reverse, a small rim chip, and a minor in-the-firing ping to interior of rim and right side of front. H 12".
