Rare and Fine Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "SAM'L I IRVINE, / NEWVILLE, PA.," circa 1865, ovoid pitcher with flaring collar, semi-rounded rim, and tooled accents to collar and upper body, brush-decorated across the belly with a large flower with elongated center petals. Swag decoration to collar and spout. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Cobalt-highlighted maker's mark to midsection. Among the better examples of stoneware from Irvine's pottery that we have offered. Very nice condition with one spout chip, some in-the-firing gritty residue to leaves of floral decoration, a small in-the-firing ping to midsection, and a shallow in-the-firing contact mark to base of handle. H 10 3/4".
