Rare Stoneware Cake Crock with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "SAM'L. I. IRVINE, / NEWVILLE, PA," circa 1865, wide, cylindrical form with squared rim, tooled shoulder, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a large, long-petaled floral motif on the front and reverse, the design on the front accented with spots. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed with oval Samuel Irvine maker's mark at base. Featuring unusual form and bold brushwork, this cake crock is among the better examples from Irvine's pottery that we have offered. A 3" hairline from rim on front. A small rim chip. Diam. 10" ; H 5 3/8".
