Extremely Rare and Important Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Impressed Federal Eagle Decoration, attributed to the Morgan / Van Wickle Pottery, Old Bridge, NJ, circa 1810, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a large impressed and cobalt-highlighted design of a Federal eagle with shield, surrounded by an elliptical cartouche. Shoulder with two rows of coggled ovals. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. The design on this jar is possibly one of the earliest depictions of a Federal eagle on New Jersey stoneware. Provenance: Crocker Farm, Inc., March 19 2016, lot 131. Exfoliation to base on reverse as well as some lighter exfoliation to front below decoration. A minor nick or contact mark to one handle. H 13".
