Extremely Rare Ovoid Stoneware Jug with Incised Bust of a Woman, Stamped "T. WARNE. Co / SOUTH AMBOY," New Jersey origin circa 1797-1805, ovoid jug with tooled foot and heavily-reeded neck, the shoulder with coggled oval pattern. Surface decorated with a deeply-incised bust of a woman with long hair, necklace, and bare chest. The mark "T. WARNE. CO" is impressed on the left shoulder and highlighted in reddish-brown slip; the opposite shoulder is impressed with the words "SOUTH AMBOY." This very rare and early mark was employed circa 1797-1805, before Joshua Letts had become greatly involved with Warne's operation. The inclusion of a folk art rendering of a woman makes this jug a very important example of early American stoneware, and likely one of the finest examples of New Jersey stoneware to be offered anywhere in some time. Provenance: Reportedly found in a barn near the Warne pottery a few decades ago. Base chips. Hairline at base, possibly in-the-firing. Some exfoliation to surface, mostly below midsection. In-the-firing crazing to surface. H 12 5/8".
