Rare and Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Impressed Decoration, Stamped "LIBERTY.FOR.EV," Thomas Warne and Joshua Letts, South Amboy, NJ, early 19th century, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, flared collar, and open loop handles, featuring rare "LIBERTY.FOR.EV" stamp within a serrated border including pointing finger, above two impressed and cobalt-highlighted scalloped drape motifs. Collar decorated with a band of vertical, pointed ovals. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Desirable size, strong color, and extraordinary condition. Provenance: Ex-W. Oakley Raymond Collection (includes his collection stickers on underside); later acquired by the consignor's grandparents, early American antiques collectors from Piscataway, NJ. Essentially as-made condition with only a shallow, glazed-over 3/4" rim chip, which occurred pre-firing, and a 1" partially glazed-over rim chip, which occurred in the firing. The survival of this jar, roughly 220 years old, in this condition is noteworthy. H 9 1/2".
