Rare and Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Impressed Decoration, Stamped "T W J L," Thomas Warne and Joshua Letts, South Amboy, NJ, early 19th century, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily tooled shoulder, and open loop handles, coggle-decorated in two rows around the upper body with sawtoothed column designs. Front shoulder impressed with "T W J L" maker's mark, the lettering interspersed with small impressed checkerboard patterns. Impressed inverted drape decoration to midsection on front and reverse. Maker's mark, drape decoration, and handle terminals are all highlighted in a purplish-black slip, likely composed of cobalt mixed with manganese. Perhaps the finest jar bearing this stamp that we have offered, this example is distinguished by its more-elaborate impressed decoration, rare slip treatment, and fine color. A 3" x 2 3/8" Y-shaped line to proper left side of jar, likely in-the-firing. A small portion of this line is barely visible on the interior. A 3/4" rim chip to proper right side of jar. Areas of staining to surface. H 9 1/4".
