Very Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Impressed and Cobalt-Highlighted Decoration, Stamped "LIBERTY FOREV / S AMBOY N JERSY," Thomas Warne and Joshua Letts, South Amboy, New Jersey, circa 1807, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied rounded handles, the front decorated with the large impressed motto "LIBERTY FOREV" beside a pointing hand, surrounded by an intricate sawtoothed border. Impressed below with the mark "S. AMBOY. N. JERSY", above a scalloped-edge drape with cobalt highlights to the interior. Handle terminals with additional cobalt highlights. This jar features one of the most historically-significant of all American stoneware marks, made during a period when the country was still being tested as a self-sufficient democracy. Coupled with its highly-prized stamp is an appealing one-gallon size to the pot. Provenance: Crocker Farm, Inc., July 16, 2016, lot 127. Two 1" chips to rim on reverse. Other minor rim wear. A thin, approximately 3 1/4" crack from rim on front, difficult to see on front, which is longer and more visible on the interior. Typical minor surface wear. H 8 1/2".
