Fine Large-Sized Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Iron Slip Decoration, Inscribed "C," Stamped "CHANDLER / MAKer," Thomas Chandler Pottery, Kirksey's Crossroads, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1850, ovoid jar with thin, semi-rounded rim and arched tab handles, decorated on the front and reverse with slip-trailed iron slip drape motifs, the front including a wider drape surrounding the maker's mark and a slip-trailed, "C," for "Chandler" below. Iron slip looping decoration below each handle. Surface covered in a gray-green alkaline glaze. Jar measures roughly six or seven gallons. Rim with two chips, measuring 1 1/4" and 1/2". A 5 1/4" diagonal Y-shaped line to interior of rim, visible as a 2 1/4" horizontal line below rim on reverse. A 2 1/4" horizontal surface line to interior of rim on front, not visible on exterior. Numerous short, primarily Y-shaped surface lines to interior, likely in-the-firing and not visible on exterior.
