Rare Assembled Pair of One-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jugs with Complementary Slip Decoration, attributed to the Thomas Chandler Pottery, Kirksey's Crossroads, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1850, each of unusual, semi-ovoid form with semi-squared spouts, one decorated with a two-stemmed foliate motif in slip-trailed kaolin slip against a glossy, bluish-gray ground, the other decorated with a matching motif in slip-trailed iron slip against an olive-colored ground. The white-slip-decorated jug appears to be higher fired than its counterpart. A wonderful pair showcasing different glaze and slip treatments by this highly-regarded maker.
