Fine Two-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jug with Iron Slip Floral Decoration, attributed to the Thomas Chandler Pottery, Kirksey's Crossroads, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1850, highly ovoid jug with small semi-squared spout and heavily-ribbed handle, decorated in iron slip with a large slip-trailed flower blossom surrounding the number, "2," denoting two gallons. Gray-green alkaline-glazed ground. Exhibited/Literature: Swag & Tassel: The Innovative Stoneware of Thomas Chandler, McKissick Museum, August 6, 2018 - July 20, 2019, p. 63, pl. 63 of exhibition catalog. Provenance: Found in the attic of David and Jon Ward's circa 1835 home, The William Bates House, when they purchased it. This auction will likely mark the first time this jug has sold publicly since it was made. Excellent condition with a minor in-the-firing chip to handle, minor glazed-over lines near upper handle terminal, and some light staining. H 12 1/2".
