Rare Three-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jug with Kaolin Slip Floral Decoration and "1852" Date, attributed to the Thomas Chandler Pottery, Kirksey's Crossroads, Edgefield District, SC, 1852, ovoid jug with cylindrical spout, decorated in slip-trailed kaolin slip with a large flower blossom surrounding the number, "3", denoting three gallons, and the date, "1852," applied against a grayish alkaline-glazed ground. Relatively few dated examples of Chandler stoneware are known. Some wear to slip and surface. A very shallow flake to spout. A minor in-the-firing nick to interior of spout. A hairline through handle. Some matte areas to surface around bottom half of jug. H 17 1/2".
