Very Rare Open-Handled Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Iron Slip Decoration, attributed to the Thomas Chandler Pottery, Kirksey's Crossroads, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1850, squat-shaped, ovoid jar with thin, flaring rim and two vertical open handles applied at the shoulder, decorated on the front and reverse in slip-trailed iron slip with looping line motifs against a light-olive alkaline-glazed ground. Exceptional form. Very few open-handled jars from Chandler's pottery are known. Provenance: Purchased by the Wards years ago from a picker for $1400. Originally bought by the latter for $10 at a yard sale, where it was described as a "Mexican cookie jar." Excellent, essentially as-made condition with two small in-the-firing pings at base, not visible on interior. H 9".
