Rare and Fine Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Two-Color Slip Decoration, attributed to Thomas Chandler at Phoenix Factory, Shaw's Creek, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1840, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flattened lug handles, and thin, semi-rounded rim, decorated on the front, reverse, and below each handle, with a striking drape motif composed of brushed iron slip and looping application of slip-trailed kaolin slip. Olive-brown alkaline-glazed ground. Incised with five slash marks below one handle. Outstanding decoration. Provenance: From a fifty-year SC collection. A large, approximately 4 1/4" x 3 1/4" hole in underside. Profuse flaking to clay on underside. Residue from use and additional glaze loss around base. A few surface flakes to midsection. Light wear to interior of rim. Some flakes to interior of jar. An excellent candidate for restoration. H 16 1/4".
