One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "CORTLAND," Madison Woodruff possibly with Romanzo Smith, Cortland, NY, origin, circa 1867-1869 cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and flared rim, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a flower with solid-cobalt blossom and slip-trailed swags to leaves. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Includes fitting salt-glazed lid, Northeastern U.S. origin. Provenance: William Bouck Collection. Rim chips and light rim wear. Chips to inner rim for lid. A few base flakes. Staining to base. Light fry to cobalt. A 1 1/2" flake to underside. Lid with whitish residue and a minor, glazed-over chip to knob. H 9".
