One-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, handle at base on reverse, and applied clay tabs with wood-and-wire bail handle; brush-decorated on the reverse with an unusual fan-shaped floral motif and on the front with a large wreath surrounding a smaller wreath at the base of the spout. Cobalt highlights to tabs and shoulder and maker's mark. Spout with a very small Y-shaped hairline to tip and an in-the-firing salt drip. Shallow, glazed-over rim chips on reverse. Chips to shoulder molding below. A small in-the-firing rim chip to reverse. Some fry to cobalt. Staining to spout. H 8 7/8".
