Five-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Kaolin Slip Decoration, attributed to Thomas Chandler, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1850, highly-ovoid jar with thin, semi-rounded rim, and arched tab handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a drape motif in slip-trailed kaolin slip. Looping line decoration below handles. Gray-green alkaline-glazed ground with blue-green runs to shoulder area. A 2" rim chip above one handle. A 2 1/2" hairline from rim on front and reverse. A minor chip to one handle. Some light water glass staining to exterior and minor surface wear. Some in-the-making, glazed-over gashes in clay to base area. H 15 1/2".
