Four-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Kaolin Slip Decoration, attributed to Thomas Chandler, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1850, highly-ovoid jar with flattened rim and arched tab handles, decorated on the front and reverse in slip-trailed kaolin slip with a sunflower blossom surrounding the number 4. Gray-green alkaline-glazed ground. A small in-the-firing fissure in one handle. A thin 2 1/4" crack on underside, continuing 7 3/4" up reverse. Some spots of wear and in-the-firing spalling to kaolin. H 14 1/4".
