Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO. / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1860, cylindrical jug with squared spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a scrolled branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Varnish over cobalt, although there does not appear to be any restoration on the jug. A long horizontal crack at base. A chip and nick to top of spout and some wear to bottom edge of spout. Some light staining. Two short, faint lines in underside. H 17 5/8".
