Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Peacock-on-Branch Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON, / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a peacock with tucked head, crest, and long, eye-decorated tail, perched on a detailed branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Among the finest and rarest Norton bird motifs that we have ever offered, featuring crisp slip-trailing and superb color and contrast. Excellent condition with a small chip to interior of rim and chipping around inner rim for lid. H 11 1/4".
