Six-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stenciled "JAMES HAMILTON / & CO. / GREENSBORO / PA," circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a stenciled rose surrounded by James Hamilton maker's stenciling. Additional stenciled floral motifs to shoulder and base. Freehand stripes to shoulder and base and freehand "6" at base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A 3 1/4" Y-shaped crack to right handle, emanating from a small chip. Wear and staining to surface. A in-the-firing contact mark to base on front and reverse. Two minor in-the-firing pings to right side. A tiny chip to interior of rim. H 16 1/2".
