Scarce Five-Gallon Stoneware Water Cooler with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "S. HART / FULTON.," NY State origin, mid 19th century, ovoid cooler with flared rim, applied lug handles, and square bunghole, decorated with a brushed flower and buds emanating from a leafy stem. Depressed embellishments around shoulder. Bunghole with cobalt-highlighted border and spots in the corners representing screwheads. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Includes fitting stoneware lid, possibly original. Two chips to exterior of rim. A small chip to interior of rim. Light staining. A small in-the-firing raised spot in clay on reverse. A tiny nick to each side of bunghole. Minor chipping to interior of bunghole. Lid in essentially as-made condition with two in-the-firing fissures to underside. H 14 1/2".
