Outstanding Five-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Horse Head Decoration, Stamped "W. HART. / OGDENSBURGH," NY State origin, circa 1858-1869, ovoid jug with short, flaring spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a horse head including a bridle, wavy mane, and looping flourish below. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. This jug is easily the largest example of Hart stoneware depicting the pottery's iconic horse head motif that we have offered. Its rare five-gallon size is complemented by an unusually large rendering of the horse head, measuring 11 3/4" tall from the base of the flourish to the top of the animal's ears. Several small spout chips. A minor, 3/4" inverted U-shaped surface line in spout. A 1 3/8" chip to bottom edge on reverse. Some in-the-firing iron pings to surface. H 18".
