Unusual Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Deer Decoration, New York State origin, circa 1875, semi-0void jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a deer standing in a field of grass and flowers. An incised vertical line divides the two front legs and two back legs. Slip-trailed "3" to shoulder. The only deer of this particular style that we have seen. Rim chips, the largest measuring 1 1/4". Inner rim for lid with a minor chip and wear. An in-the-firing contact mark to proper left side of jar. A 5 1/2" inverted Y-shaped line to reverse. Some tight lines to underside, one of which continues 1 1/4" up base on reverse, forming a 3" long T. Some light staining and blackish residue to reverse. H 13 3/4".
