Unusual Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Pecking Chicken Decoration, Stamped "NEW YORK / STONEWARE CO. / FORT EDWARD N.Y.," circa 1875, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a chicken with unusually-long tail, standing atop a stylized ground and pecking at a stylized insect or plant. Cobalt accents to maker's mark. The overall style of the chicken is somewhat different than commonly found on the Fort Edward potteries, and the curved X design replacing the kernels below the chicken is a rarely-seen addition. A few chips to exterior of rim. A 1" section of shallow chipping to one handle. A drip of old brown paint to opposite handle, unrelated to any sort of restoration. A small in-the-firing iron spot to front. Areas of mottled staining. H 11 5/8".
