Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Anchor Decoration, Stamped "S.B. BOSWORTH / HARTFORD," CT origin, circa 1880-1890, cylindrical jug with tooled spout, decorated with a cobalt design of a ship's anchor with chain, cleverly brushed with the chain emanating from the spout of the jug. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. The design on this jug was no doubt inspired by Hartford's maritime culture. Very nice condition with only minor flaws. A few small spout chips. A 2" in-the-firing fissure at base on side of jug, extending 1 1/8" onto underside. A faint 1 3/4" horizontal surface line above maker's mark. Minor surface wear above "B" in "BOSWORTH." A salt drip at base. A few streaks of light-brown staining, presumably remnants of what the jug once held. H 13 3/4".
